Too often in life we are so busy doing, doing, doing that we miss out on the important things.
I know for many years I lived this way. I just let life happen to me. I thought I knew who I was and what stirred me. But I was only fooling myself. I had not really taken the time to be introspective, to identify my true strengths, or to figure out how to apply anything I knew about myself to the actions I took every day.
As a single mom for 14 years, caring for young children, managing the household, working full time in mostly male dominated fields there was little time left for me to focus on me. Work life balance was not even a thought at that time. If asked at that time “Who are you?” I would have said I was a single mom. I didn’t even think of any other way of answering that question.
Fast forward to today. I have come to learn there are so many other answers to that question. Learning who you are can happen in many different ways. You can take time, sit with a journal and reflect on the various roles you have in life. You can ask others how they see you. You can think about things you have accomplished.
In addition, you could work with a life coach to help identify your strengths and your personality styles. There are many assessments that a coach can use to help you determine who you are. I can use various assessments, as your life coach (Strengths Finder, DiSC, Spiritual Gifts, etc.) to help you know more of who you are.
So, the big question you might have is, why does it matter? Knowing yourself better, your strengths, the ways you handle life situations, what makes you tick can help you have healthier relationships, at work to be more productive, to be a better team member, to live a happier life, to have more confidence, or to get involved in a ministry that you are drawn to. You don’t have to feel like you don’t fit. You really can find the best in yourself and use that insight to live an abundant life and truly flourish.
